In 1859, Swiss businessman Henri Dunant began a crusade to provide better medical treatment for wounded soldiers, which led to the creation of the most important human rights organisation in history, currently maintaining 137 societies worldwide.
Caroline Moorehead, a columnist on human rights for The Independent, is the first writer to be granted wide access to the Red Cross’s closed archives in Geneva.
